C. Everett Koop Papers
Dr. C. Everett Koop was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) in February 1981, and sworn in as Surgeon General on November 17, 1981. The collection documents Koop's career as a leading pediatric surgeon during the 1950s-1970s, his activities as Surgeon General from 1981-1989 and the many public health issues with which he was concerned, and some of his post-Surgeon General's career as a health advocate.
Emery A. Johnson Papers
Emery A. Johnson (1929-2005), American physician, administrator, and health advocate, devoted his career to improving the health needs of the country's Native American and Alaska Native populations. He was the fourth director of the Indian Health Service (I.H.S.), an Assistant Surgeon General of the United States, and a life-long supporter of allowing American Indians to take control of their own health care management.

The collection documents the varied research and policy-making career of this environmental health specialist with the U.S. Department of Heath, Education and Welfare and the Public Health Service. His papers contain a wealth of primary source research materials and scientific data related to: environmental and industrial hygiene; radon activity; use of beryllium as a rocket propellant; uranium mining; and toxicological, biological and chemical weapon systems.
